A mandala depicts in two-dimensional form the three-dimensional space inhabited by the deity. The bird’s-eye-view centralizes the main deity within concentric squares, circles and borders of his associated lineage and related figures, arranged in order of importance .
What is a Thangka Painting?
It is a tool for meditation or contemplative object used to illustrate various aspects of Buddha’s teachings, meditative instruction, or the cosmological representation of the pure microcosm (pure mandala) of the deity.
In a way it is the tool that facilitates the process of realization of one's true nature or the nature of reality.
It can also be a way to express something profound that might not be expressed through words. Something that can take a practitioner from the liminal zone of conceptuality to the subliminal zone of metaphorical mind (subtle symbolic) which through proper guidance and blessings eventually would lead to the realization of emptiness.
We can also explain a thangka using a classical example.
If we see a baby about to fall off a ledge, we lure him back by showing toys, or it’s favorite sound etc.
Just like that Thangka paintings are such objects which lure us human beings from Samsara to Dharma.
