Oil Varnished Stupa Mandala:
The elaborate and distinctive Tibetan Buddhist artwork known as the oil varnished stupa mandala depicts the Buddha's enlightened realm. Usually formed of wood, the mandala is meticulously painted and embellished with gold leaf, precious stones, and elaborate motifs. A three-dimensional stupa, a traditional Buddhist structure that represents the Buddha's enlightenment, serves as the mandala's main focal point.
The wood is coated with several layers of oil varnish, a form of resin, to give it a glossy and long-lasting finish, in a labor-intensive technique used to build the stupa mandala. A smooth, even surface that is perfect for painting and decorating is produced by carefully applying the varnish and allowing each layer to dry before continuing.
