Description

Tibetan Buddhism. Phurba, Kila, Vajrakilaya:

The ritual dagger (Sanskrit: Kila; Tibetan: phurba) is essential to the dispelling of evil and is understood as being especially helpful in neutralizing the forces that impede Tantric Buddhist practice. Its origins are ancient, appearing in the Indian Rg Veda as the central blade of the vajra that Indra used to slay the primordial cosmic snake Vritra. Its Sanskrit term, kila, which means peg or stake, was probably linked to Vedic sacrifices.

The three-headed Vajrakila Buddha is invoked through meditation on the Vajrakila Tantra, an early Indian text first propagated in Tibet in the eighth century by Padmasambhava, one of the founding masters of Tibetan Buddhism.

We have had this Phurba in our collection for over 25 years now . This Phurba was stored away for several years. We just very recently decided to showcase our vintage Phurba on platforms such as Etsy. We were thrilled to discover the quality and depth of these beautiful sculptures when we opened the boxes and decided to showcase them online for everyone. In early 2000 we changed our company name from J.B.Art Center to Ritual Thanka and focused primarily on collecting and selling thangka paintings. Due to Covid 19, we have had to change our business strategy and focus more on online platforms. We hope the aesthetics of this vintage Phurba brings a deep sense of happiness to your hearts.

A purba (Tibetan: phur ba. Sanskrit: kila) is a three edged peg usually made from metal or wood. They are sometimes described as daggers with three blades. The best of the metal ones from a Tantric Buddhist point of view are constructed from meteorite iron. Sandalwood is also popular. Various ritual texts may also specify a specific substance or medium for the specialized magical application. The principal deity associated with the purba is Vajrakila.

Amazed by their customer service and collection. Would definitely recommend them to everyone

Really Great Customer Service and very beautiful thangka collection.

This is a magnificent piece of Buddha Shakyamuni thangka. Masterfully executed in rich, vibrant colors with illuminating detail; The silk brocade frame compliments the painting beautifully and forms a focal point in our praying/meditation room I receive the piece earlier than expected in good shape; and prior to purchase, Rajendra was responding quickly and very helpful in providing high resolution picture for my further evaluation. Thank you Rajendra and surely I will be back again.

I was extremely pleased with the quality of the unique thangka I received, as well as the immaculate brocade. Communication with Ritual Thanka has been a pleasure, and shipping was faster than I could have hoped for. Six stars! :)
