What is a Thangka painting?
The Tibetan word Thangka means an unfolding painting, where the word Thang stands for an unfolding scroll and Ka means a painting. Thangka paintings, as a whole, are a visual representation of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas, painted on silk or cotton canvas.
Thangka Paintings follow a generic principle of composition, design, and iconography. It is made following tradition and guidelines while leaving spaces for personal creativity and expression. In Buddhist culture, Thangka Paintings hold high religious values. In a way, it is also a tool that facilitates the realization of one's true nature or the nature of reality

White Tara Thangka, Himalayan Buddhist Thangka
White Tara (also called Dolma) is the female Bodhisattva of Compassion. She embodies the motivation of compassion in action, bestowing blessings of mercy and release from suffering. She engenders, nourishes, smiles at the vitality of creation, and has sympathy for all beings as a mother does for her children.
In the thangka, White Tara, or also Dolma, is placed at the center visibly making stand out in her radiating white body. White Tara is seated crossed-legged on the lotus and moon seat and holds her hand in the same pose as Green Tara. Her special attributes are her seven eyes, the third eye on her forehead, four eyes on the palms of her hand, and the sole of her feet.
